Overview of class
This is an introductory course covering the theory and application of geographic
information systems (GIS). Students will gain a broad understanding of GIS principles and hands-on experience using GIS tools. Key topics include GIS components, spatial data characteristics, data models (vector and raster), spatial database, vector and raster operations, and GIS applications. While ArcGIS Pro will be used for exercises and assignments, this course is not focused on teaching ArcGIS Pro or any specific software.
Registration Requirements
There are no prerequisites required. All Environmental Sciences, EARTH, and EPC majors/minors should register for the class during the pre-registration period.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the course, students will be able to: Explain the conceptual and practical foundations of GIS; Distinguish between vector and raster data models; Understand datums, projections, and geographic/projected coordinate systems; Describe the structure and organization of spatial databases; Design and produce maps that effectively convey geospatial information; Perform basic spatial analyses using ArcGIS Pro; Apply GIS skills to community-based or service-learning projects.
Teaching Method
The course combines lectures and lab sessions each week. Students will engage with theoretical content, complete in-class exercises, and practice relevant GIS techniques through guided lab assignments.
Class Materials (Required)
Students must bring a fully charged and functioning laptop to each lab session.
For students using Windows based computers, you may install ArcGIS Pro on your laptop or access it through NUWorkspace (Apporto). See this website if you would like to install ArcGIS Pro on your own laptop: https://pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/latest/get-started/arcgis-pro-system-requirements.htm.
For students using Mac, please access ArcGIS Pro via NUWorkspace (Apporto). More information on NUWorkspace (Apporto) can be found here: https://www.mccormick.northwestern.edu/it-resources/labs/nuworkspace-lab.html
Class Materials (Suggested)
GIS Fundamentals: A First Text On Geographic Information Systems (7th Edition). Authors: Paul Bolstad and Steven Manson. ISBN: 9780971764750.
