Overview of class

This seminar will examine the first-person films and videos of Agnes Varda and George Kuchar. Agnes Varda (1928 - 2019), whom Scorses describes as "one of the Gods of Cinema," was known for narrative films as well as documentaries often featuring Varda herself as subject / narrator / interlocutor. We'll be focusing on these works. George Kuchar (1942 - 2011) was a prolific queer underground filmmaker and video artist. We'll be focusing on his video diaries. We'll do close readings of specific films and videos, as well as stepping back and thinking about larger issues. Warning: some of the works, especially Kuchar's, can be sexually explicit / campily bawdy.
