Overview of class
London has been an iconic place on the global theatrical scene for many centuries. Moving across eras, genres, and spaces, our objective will be to understand how the city has both shaped and been shaped by the theatre it produces. Our tour of performance in the British capital will take in a wide variety of sites and shows, including: blockbuster musicals in the present-day West End such as The Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables; the world's longest running play (The Mousetrap by Agatha Christie); city comedies on Southbank in the seventeenth-century; and the Royal Court Theatre's history of championing radical new writing. Throughout, we will examine not only how theatre has explored and represented London through its subject matter, but also how the economic, social, and political structures of London itself have influenced British and global theatrical practice.
