Overview of class

As theatre practitioners, how do we ‘read' a play or performance? How do we bring a text from page to stage as a fully realized production? In this course, we will explore different methodologies for analyzing and interpreting theatrical texts. Students will be invited to consider how text analysis informs the work of directors, dramaturgs, audiences, actors and scholars, among others, from aesthetic, critical, and technical perspectives. Using an expansive definition of ‘text' we will read and analyze a variety of theatrical works from different periods, styles, genres, cultures, and forms, including performances that do not originate from written scripts. Through readings, class discussions and viewings, students will develop a toolbox of skills to analyze texts holistically across diverse disciplines in the theatre. This course will be suited to those looking to deepen their theatre practice and/or research and critical skills.
