Overview of class

Everyone loves a love story—but this deceptively simple form is one of the hardest genres to write well. Romance demands two equally compelling lead characters and a plot in which surprise grows from intimacy. In this intensive writing class, we will explore the love story in its many variations and discuss the nuances of developing a romance on the page (without falling into cliché), from the "meet cute" to the resolution—happy, bittersweet, or tragic.
Class meetings will also include discussion of films viewed outside of class, writing exercises, and constructive group critiques. By the end of the quarter, students will complete a story synopsis and at least 30 pages of an original feature-length screenplay.
