Overview of class
This course offers an introduction to the art of dance criticism, focusing on its purpose, methods, and influence within the field of contemporary dance. Students will explore professional and peer-created works while developing the skills to articulate insightful and nuanced responses through critical engagement with live and recorded dance. The course surveys a range of contemporary artists to examine shared themes and aesthetic divergences across the diverse and multifaceted landscape of dance today. Emphasizing selected 'contemporary directions,' the course encourages thoughtful reflection, discussion, and research to deepen students' understanding of the evolving world of dance.
