Overview of class
Contemporary dance is an evolving, fluid, and emergent form drawing from many disciplines and aesthetics. At its core, this class is about continuing to develop the acuity, strength, mobility, and attention to detail needed to learn any dance technique. We will cultivate joy in our moving bodies and a sense of comradery through generous witnessing of our peers. Our weekly practice will draw on various styles that make up Western European contemporary dance including improvisation, African Diasporic dance, ballet, conditioning, partner work, and somatic movement. We will practice extensive release-based floorwork sequences, generate heat through rhythmic patterns that move through space, and use improvisation as a tool to build specificity in our bodies and in our attention to space. We will focus on three main aspects of contemporary dance: weight, flow, and musicality.
We will take some time to discuss movement material and how it relates to a shared definition of contemporary dance throughout the quarter. Through active witnessing and in-class discussions, we will build a class community that highlights generosity, rigor, curiosity, and acceptance. Previous dance experience is strongly suggested.
