Overview of class

From Data to Decisions: Applying Child Policy Research Methods is an intermediate-level course designed to build upon students' prior knowledge of developmental science and policy. The purpose of this course is to guide students through the child policy research process from formulating research questions and hypotheses to conducting descriptive analyses using secondary data to creating engaging graphics. Throughout the quarter, students will design an original research study exploring a specific topic in child development that has implications for program or policy at the local, state, or national level. The final project is to produce an informative and professional report communicating the results of their quarter-long research study.

Registration Requirements

The assumption is that students have no research or statistical experience but do have some background in developmental science and/or policy. Therefore, students must have completed at least one of the following courses to enroll: SESP 201 (Childhood and Adolescence), SESP 322 (Crafting Child Policy), SocPol 351-0-20 (Child and Family Policy), or PSYCH 244 (Developmental Psychology).

Enrollment Requirements: Pre-Registration -- Reserved for SESP Students until the end of preregistration, after which time enrollment will be open to everyone who has taken the prerequisites, if applicable.
