Overview of class

This course offers an introductory experience in music composition for undergraduate students from any background, including those with limited formal training. Students will explore fundamental concepts of musical creation through listening, analysis, discussion, and creative exercises. Emphasis is placed on developing a deeper understanding of how music is constructed and how personal expression can emerge through compositional choices. By the end of the course, students will complete a creative project that reflects both their analytical insight and artistic growth.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, students will be able to:
• Listen critically and identify key musical elements such as form, harmony, rhythm, and melody.
• Analyze the structure and characteristics of existing musical works.
• Explore techniques for generating, developing, and shaping musical ideas.
• Reflect on the role of identity, inspiration, and influence in creative work.
• Create an original composition, arrangement, or remix that demonstrates a thoughtful engagement with musical materials.

Teaching Method

• Lectures and Listening Sessions: Introduction of musical concepts and exploration of selected examples through guided discussion.
• Peer and Instructor Feedback: Opportunities for students to share work-in-progress and receive constructive critique.
• Individual Meetings: One-on-one support for project development and conceptual guidance.
• Final Presentations: Students will share their final creative projects and discuss their approach and process.

Laptop with a Digital Audio Workstation or notation software, though no prior experience with technology is required.
