Overview of class

In this seminar, we will explore the multifaceted phenomenon of music enculturation, examining both the processes through which individuals acquire culture-specific musical knowledge and skills and the outcomes of those enculturative experiences. Drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives from various fields, including but not limited to music education, music cognition, ethnomusicology, psychology, and anthropology, students will engage with:
• Theoretical frameworks (e.g., Demorest & Morrison's cultural distance hypothesis, Hood's bi-musicality).
• Empirical research on music enculturation processes (e.g., active listening, imitation, formal instruction) and outcomes (e.g., cognitive processing, behavioral competencies, sociocultural identity)
• Practical applications in music pedagogy and scholarship
