Overview of class
This core Musicology graduate seminar is intended to help students begin to think about what constitutes a (primary) musical source or document, and to work with scholarly considerations about musical works as they're found in performance, in libraries, in all sorts of archives, in every medium, submitted to publishers of critical editions, and included as musical examples in academic books and articles. Students will practice several kinds of music-editorial techniques on contrasting repertories. Scholarly material and methodologies will be drawn from all fields of musical inquiry, critical theory, media studies, and textual studies. The course will include practical work in several kinds of archives, online and especially in person, and touch on how the digital humanities and artificial intelligence affect presentation and reception of music from scholarly perspectives.
Registration Requirements
The course is designed for graduate students in Music Studies, especially Musicology, but other graduate students interested in music editorial methods may take the course with the professor's permission.
Learning Objectives
Practical applications of everything described in the Overview above and the abilities to prepare musical examples for scholarly circulation, critically evaluate editions of music, and question how and why music is presented in scholarly books, articles, and websites.
Teaching Method
This is a discussion-oriented course that also includes practical exercises.
Evaluation Method
Class participation, short assignments, presentations and a final project.
