Overview of class

This course is an introduction to the music, traditions, and history of various Native American tribes throughout North America.

Registration Requirements

• Be able to identify the music traditions of several major tribes from each geographical region of North America
• Understand the historical context of the music and surrounding traditions
• Be able to understand and articulate the impact of major historical events on those traditions
• Be introduced to indigenous methods regarding how to research music traditions
• Gather insight into the Native perspective by learning how to discern and interpret information about Native music in various types of sources

Teaching Method

This course will include lectures, follow-up discussions of reading and listening assignments, as well as videos and indigenous guest speakers whenever possible. Students will also be recommended to attend relevant events involving indigenous scholars or artists on the Northwestern University campus hosted by either the Bienen School of Music or the Center for Native American and Indigenous Research.

Evaluation Method

Students will be graded on attendance, participation in reflections on reading and listening assignments, exams, and a final project.
