Overview of class
As one of the most multifaceted, iconic, and sophisticated artists of 21st-century popular music, this course takes Lady Gaga's contributions to music, fashion, dance, and film as serious opportunities for analysis and critique. We will discuss, in an academic context, the myriad issues and themes Lady Gaga explores in her own oeuvre, which include and extend beyond her music, lyrics, music videos, philanthropy, endorsed products, cameo appearances, and political endorsements. Supplemented with simple texts drawn primarily from queer theory and musicology and interspersed with topics ranging from Catholicism and misogyny to queer liberalism and American celebrity identity, the course provides students with the opportunity to: discover the extensive work of Lady Gaga; learn basic strategies for analyzing pop music; think critically about genders, sexualities, identities, and their representations; and discuss how music broadly relates to its social, political, historical, and cultural contexts.
