Overview of class

This section of the course will focus on Western classical music history, from Gregorian chant to the present day.

Registration Requirements

None.

Learning Objectives

Students will acquire a good working knowledge of the history of Western music. They will be able to identify the different periods of music, major composers and works, and understand the key differences between these periods. They will also be able to listen to Western classical musical works in an analytical way, understanding how the various musical elements such as harmony, melody and rhythm are working in any given piece.

Teaching Method

Assignments will include readings, pop quizzes, pieces to listen to, opera synopses to learn, and other such homework activities. Class time will include exercises in close listening to musical works, through which students will learn to listen for harmonic, melodic, textural, timbral and rhythmic elements which are typical or indeed atypical of their respective period. I will also assign class presentations for certain topics - each student (or groups of students) presenting on, for example, Bel Canto or Minimalism - and short written assignments each week, requiring a paragraph or two in response to a question.

Evaluation Method

The main assessments will be presentations, pop quizzes and weekly assignments. Attendance and participation will also take up a large percentage of the grade.
