Overview of class
What is music? How do we distinguish between sound and music? Can certain sound practices be classified as non-music?
In this course section, we will immerse ourselves in many shapes of music, contexts, and intentions behind music. We will explore European and U.S. art music repertoire while also addressing other music that aligns with students' interests. Our approach will encompass perceptual, analytical, and historical perspectives, connecting the material both to personal experiences and to broader themes such as politics, identity, economy, gender, religion, dance, technology, orientalism, mysticism, spirituality, and environment.
