Overview of class

Modeling of systems with emergent behavior. The course has two components: (1) basic and intermediate statistical mechanics, and (2) application of the course methods to a case study, chosen from topics to
include: dynamics of polymers, including proteins and nucleic acids; molecular machines; pattern formation, including turbulence and phyllotaxis; geomorphology; conflict including warfare, terrorism and revolution;
and economics.
