Overview of class

The objective of this course is to develop broad knowledge of the most commonly used techniques for characterizing soft and hard materials, with a strong focus on microscopy techniques. This is a lecture-only class, without lab sections or hands-on training on instrument operation. Topics include:

1. Concept of materials characterization
2. Sample preparation
3. Optical microscopy
4. Scanning electron microscopy
5. Focused ion beam
6. Transmission electron microscopy
7. X-ray techniques
8. Other characterization techniques
