Overview of class

The three graded assignments will entail researching, drafting and editing an appellate bench memo and appellate and trial court opinions, resulting in multiple writing samples suitable for clerkship and other job applications. This course satisfies the professional writing requirement and counts toward the experiential learning requirement.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, you will have a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of judicial decision-making and writing; the role of the law clerk in the judicial writing process; and various styles and approaches to judicial writing. Through exercises and assignments, you also will be better equipped to identify and analyze legal and factual issues before the court; research and write as an impartial decision-maker; and edit, cite-check, and polish your legal writing.
