Overview of class

We will look at aspects of state constitutional law, including contemporary doctrine, historical origins and patterns of state constitutional development, and competing normative ideas about state constitutionalism in the modern U.S. Students can choose for their paper assignments from a variety of topics under the rubric of state constitutional law.

Registration Requirements

No prerequisites, and the course is open to 2Ls, 3Ls, and LLM students. Some exposure to U.S. constitutional law is assumed (although no special courses are required as prereqs).

Learning Objectives

1) A familiarity with the broad themes and principles that are central to state constitutionalism and state constitutional law;
2) Experience in broad and deep research into one or more topical areas in state con law.
