Overview of class
Externships must involve doing substantive legal work in a civil government setting under the supervision of a licensed and experienced attorney. Students work a minimum of 12 hours per week at the externship site for the entire semester.
Registration Requirements
Students are responsible for securing their own externship which must be approved by the instructor prior to enrollment.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of the course and your externship, it is anticipated that you will have accomplished the following: (1) expanded and deepened your understanding of the practice of law in a civil government setting; (2) gained a practical understanding of the professional and ethical responsibilities of civil government lawyers to their clients, the courts, and the public interest at large; (3) improved your legal research, analysis, and communication skills, including both written and oral advocacy; (4) increased your understanding of one or more substantive area of the law; (5) enhanced your professionalism skills through interaction with colleagues and others in a workplace setting; and (6) gained a greater understanding of your own strengths and weaknesses through feedback and self-reflection, including identifying areas of improvement and interest.
Evaluation Method
Final course grades will be determined as follows: Journal Installment #1 (25%), Journal Installment #2 (25%), Final Presentation (25%), and Participation (25%).
