Overview of class

This class involves an introduction to and exploration of the concept and importance of investigative journalism; the rich history of investigative journalism in Chicago and the U.S.; and the basic tools of investigative journalism, including FOIAs, data, court filings, other public records, interviews and more. Students will understand the investigative mindset and process; analyze and discuss many examples of investigative journalism; and practice investigative techniques on topics of their choice. No previous investigative experience is required; students should be enrolled in the Chicago Medill Investigative Program, the PPFA specialization, or the Washington D.C.-based Medill Investigative Lab.

Class Materials (Required)

All course materials will be available online free of charge; student membership in IRE -- $25 -- is highly recommended.
