Overview of class
This course is a study in the moral and political questions that arise in the science, research, and implementation of health and medical care. The first theme we will consider is the physician-patient relationship: what norms and values ought to govern such a relationship, how these may conflict with one another, and how such conflicts can be resolved. The second theme of this course addresses issues that arise in the context of biotechnology, such as selective abortion, physician-assisted suicide, and neurointerventions. The final theme of this course is social justice and public health, where we will examine how interlocking systems of oppression influence access to and quality of care, medicalization of various human conditions, and categorization of what counts as a treatable condition. No prior experience with ethical theory is expected or required.
