Overview of class

In this course, we will explore foundational philosophical theories about the nature and value of art and aesthetic experience. We will begin by examining key aesthetic experiences—such as creation, beauty, sublimity—from the perspectives of both the artist and the observer. This inquiry will lead us to reflect on the relevance of aesthetic experience in education and its broader significance in our lives.
Building on this foundation, we will analyze art's ontological and political dimensions, focusing on its relationship to the world, propaganda, and technology. Throughout the course, we will engage with key figures in the history of Western philosophy who have thought rigorously about the importance of art—or subjected it to critique—including Plato, Kant, Schiller, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Benjamin, and Kristeva.
