Overview of class

This course is an introduction to the Hangul (Korean alphabet) writing system, Korean pronunciation, and basic sentence structures. Students will learn to use key expressions and communicate in Korean at an elementary level. The course focuses on all four language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Topics include self-introduction and greetings, daily life, hobbies, college life, friends, and family. Upon completion of the course, students are expected to attain the Novice Mid proficiency level based on the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) proficiency scale.

Learning Objectives

Interpersonal Communication
o Handle simple, everyday interactions such as greetings, describing surroundings, and talking about family using polite endings.
o Produce sentence-level utterances in the present tense using learned material.


Interpretive Communication:
o Comprehend short spoken utterances on familiar topics.
o Understand short written texts on topics that have been covered in class.
Presentational Communication
o Write simple, short texts about personal life and experiences using learned vocabulary and structures with polite informal endings.
o Deliver oral presentations (1-2 minutes) on personal topics using learned vocabulary and polite informal endings.
Culture
o Recognize cultural differences between Korean culture and one's own.
o Understand how Korean perspectives are reflected in cultural practices (e.g., holidays, blind dates, birthday celebrations) and products (e.g., names, housing, food).
