Overview of class
In this combination writing workshop and seminar, students will read some of the best science and health journalism; practice writing compelling stories about science for a lay audience; and meet the editors and writers from leading scientific journals and publications. Students will learn what makes good science writing, how to find and interview sources, and how to use reported material and edit one's own work. Students will practice translating research studies into short news for the public and pursue longer, more developed science storytelling. Tailored for PhD students, this section puts an emphasis on in-class writing activities. Longer stories require some out of class work that is spread over multiple weeks with interim check-ins. Skills learned in this class are transferable to communicating one's own research and discussing the process and results of research with broad audiences. Together we'll get really good at sharing what researchers have learned and why it matters.
