Overview of class

This practice-based course explores contemporary movement methodologies that enhance acting by integrating the body, breath, voice, and text. Students will build physical transformation skills through the Lucid Body psychophysical technique. Emphasis is placed on embodying character, cultivating a dynamic connection between physicality and performance. Each class begins with a detailed yoga warm-up and includes exercises that engage the body-mind connection through physical theatre and modern dance practices. Actors build self-awareness and expand beyond habitual responses to increase their range. Special attention is paid to emotional regulation tools, consent-forward collaboration, and the holistic development of each actor.

Class Materials (Required)

Text and Materials Needed
· The Lucid Body: A Guide for the Physical Actor by Fay Simpson ($20)
· Reliable access to the Internet and a computer to complete web-based assignments. You can also loan out a laptop or iPad from the Library at no cost (more information)
· Work wear: Choose clothing that supports freedom of the shoulders, hips, and torso. Avoid fabrics, or silhouettes that present obstacles to free movement. Clothing should be neutral and free of visible logos or design elements that distract from your ability to transform. We will work barefoot, if this is not an option for you, socks with grippy soles are acceptable. ($0-50)
· Props and costume pieces: I will invite you to bring props and costumes that intrigue you and may be used during in-class explorations. You do not need to purchase anything, but if you wish to do please be economical and sustainable and choose thrift stores and resale options. ($0-15)
· Note-taking materials: There will be opportunities for written reflection during class. For many people, pen and paper can be more effective for deep learning than taking notes electronically, but all non-disruptive modes of note-taking are welcome. ($0-5)
· Water bottle ($0-10)
· I will distribute any additional texts or resources via Canvas
