Overview of class

This course focuses on the dynamics of politics and religion in the Middle East either by states or non-state actors as from the turn of 20th century. It starts with examining notions of politics and leadership in early Islamic tradition including power, legitimacy and umma community; then proceeds to examine how and why these notions have evolved in time and space leading to political forms adopted and advocated by modern forms of Islamism.
