Overview of class
This class is titled Introduction to Probability and Statistics. We will cover descriptive statistics, probability, random variables, sampling distributions, confidence intervals, and significance tests. At the end of the term, we will introduce regression.
Registration Requirements
Strong background in high school algebra (calculus is not required).
May not receive credit for both STAT 202-0 and STAT 210-0.
When selecting an introductory statistics course to fulfill a major/minor requirement, students should consult the Undergraduate Catalog and/or the department to confirm the course they want to register for will fulfill the requirement.
Teaching Method
We will meet in lecture three times per week. We will meet in section once per week.
Evaluation Method
Grades will be based on problem sets, two midterm exams, and a final exam.
Class Materials (Required)
The textbook for the course is Statistics for Business and Economics (Eighth Edition) by Paul Newbold, William L. Carlson, and Betty M. Thorne. We are using Statistics for Business and Economics: Second Custom Edition for Northwestern University, which includes just the first 11 chapters from the eighth edition. The ISBN-13 is 978-1-256-86179-9.
