Overview of class
Course title: Palestinian National Movement
This course is devoted to understanding the Palestinian national movement. The Palestinian national movement was established in the late 1950s and early 1960s after the establishment of the State of Israel, what Palestinians call "The Catastrophe" (the Nakba.) The course explores the successes and setbacks of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). It will analyze why and how the PLO succeeded in preserving Palestinian identity, but has failed to accomplish Palestinian statehood. Students in this class will gain an introduction and a thorough understanding of the successes and setbacks of the Palestinian national movement. They will analyze internal Palestinian and Arab, regional, and international dynamics which have impacted Palestinian national aspirations. The class will also explore the power struggle between the nationalists and Islamists in Palestine.
