Overview of class

This course explores the histories, cultures, and lived experiences of Southeast Asian American communities, with a focus on Cambodian, Vietnamese, and Filipinx Americans. We will examine the forces that have shaped their migration patterns, from war and colonialism to economic globalization and refugee resettlement policies. Through an interdisciplinary lens- drawing from history, sociology, literature, and film- we will analyze themes such as displacement and diaspora, racialization, intergenerational trauma, cultural expression, sexuality, and joy. Students will engage with diverse materials including ethnographies, memoirs, oral histories, and stand-up comedy. Mandatory attendance at weekend events will be required- dates will be given on the first day of class.
