Overview of class

The purpose of this course is to investigate the relationship between performance and protest in contemporary American social movements, as well as investigating the function of theatre practitioners within those movements. We will explore the role of art in protest, the role of protest in art, and examine the similarities and differences between artistic processes and protest organizing, as well as seeking to answer the question, is Protest a form of performance? Through a combination of theory, real-life activist skill building, and case studies of performance works, we will investigate these and other issues.
