Overview of class
Students will investigate the renowned Chicago Theatre Scene while engaging in scene study featuring dramatic literature borne from the City of Big Shoulders. Among the world's most vibrant and collaborative theatre communities, Chicago is home to some two-hundred companies—from the nation's largest ensemble theatre company to the tiniest upstart storefront theatre tucked away beneath the thundering El tracks. Teatro Vista, Jackalope, Remy Bumppo, Congo Square, The Gift, Collaboraction, A Red Orchid, Silk Road Rising, Blair Thomas & Company, Manual Cinema, The Goodman, Red Twist, Black Ensemble, Northlight, About Face, The Court, Timeline, Lifeline, Raven, Definition, Chicago Children's Theatre, Steep, Porchlight, Chicago Shakespeare, and Lookingglass are just some of the exciting companies— large and small— who contribute to Chicago Theatre's wide range of diverse cultural and artistic identities. Classwork to include ensemble building, study of local companies & professional practices, and a strong emphasis on contemporary scene study from plays produced in Chicago and/or by playwrights with strong local ties.
