Overview of class
This course considers theories of rhetorical citizenship—theories that concern the way that we engage others on social and political issues—and it includes critical perspectives on the distinctive features of current public discourse (e.g., polarization, disinformation, disparities in the entitlement to speak) as well as an overview of the approaches used in successful persuasive appeals. Students will have opportunities to put these perspectives into practice by identifying a cause of concern and engaging in a range of writing tasks often employed in advocacy efforts (e.g., digital media campaigns, letters to editors, press releases, talking points documents, and op-ed essays).
