Overview of class

Queer Icons in Spain

This course explores Spanish queer icons of the 20th and 21st centuries, examining their influential work across literature, cinema, television, and philosophy. We will focus on four key figures: Veneno, a sex worker, TV personality, and vedette; filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar; novelist and poet Sara Torres; and philosopher Paul Preciado. Through the lens of queer theory, we will investigate the evolving notion of queerness, historicize its development, and analyze what elevates certain figures to the status of icon, referent, or influencer. Inspired by anarchist pedagogies, the course will involve the collaborative creation of a textbook that compiles our discussions on these icons and queer theory throughout the quarter. This collective book will serve as the textbook for future offerings of this course at Northwestern. Students will have the opportunity to engage with some of the most transgressive works of these queer icons, deepening their understanding of queer theory, while leaving a lasting impact on how future generations of Northwestern students study this subject. Prerequisites: SPAN 204-0 or AP of 5.
