Overview of class

1. Consider how another person would describe you. What are you like? How did you come to be like this? Will you always be like this? How does this influence your social interactions, and vice versa? In this class, we'll examine just this-the psychology of personality-including how it's measured and its typical and atypical development, manifestation, and expression. The broad aims of our class are to 1) compare and contrast the big theories of personality, its origins, and its consequences, 2) read empirical research to help us further evaluate the evidence supporting each theory, and 3) apply these discussions to assess the personalities of ourselves and others. Our readings, discussions, and assignments will emphasize real-world application and investigation, including the limitations of the field.

Registration Requirements

Recommended prerequisite: Psych 110

Class Materials (Required)

Course readings include journal articles and an open-access course textbook (The Balance of Personality).
