Overview of class
This seminar examines the law and politics of international organizations. It looks closely at particular organizations to understand their legal powers and political controversies; and it engages in broader consideration of the nature, power, and role of international organizations in international politics more generally. Readings will include legal treaties and charters, case studies of particular controversies, and broader analysis of the relationship between international organizations and other agents in world politics. We look in depth at the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, the International Criminal Court, sports governance bodies, and international financial institutions, as well as other international organizations. This is a seminar rather than a lecture class, and students are expected to have read and thought about the materials each week. Participation in the discussion is expected of all students.
