Overview of class
To guide learning and pedagogical practice, we employ the concept "historian as curandera [healer]." Coined by scholar Aurora Levins-Morales, the curandera lens challenges us to engage critical inquiries when exploring untold or unrepresented Latinx hi/stories and social mo(ve)ments. How does positionality affect what one sees/understands? What constitutes evidence? How do historical narratives transform when we center the marginalized? How do we make our work digestible and accessible? Students will create digital archives highlighting curandera hi/stories. Drawing on independent research, students will imagine, engage, and produce curandera hi/stories and embodied responses to curandera principles.
Registration Requirements
• Restricted to Latina and Latino Studies majors and minors.
Learning Objectives
Students will:
1. apply curandera principles to analyze and produce hi/stories;
2. articulate the significance of transformative, healing hi/stories;
3. generate a digital archive of "curandera" ephemera; and
4. create transformative, curandera hi/stories
