Overview of class

This class explores the history of modern Russia from the end of the Soviet period through the "Age of Putin." Special topics will include the decline and fall of the Soviet Union; the rise and rule of Putin; the emergence of Russia's "oligarch" class; the wars in Ukraine, Chechnya, and the Caucasus; and Russia's relations with the United States, the European Union, China, and Central Asia.

• Evaluate textual arguments for their usefulness, cohesiveness, and logic.
• Identify and access relevant information sources.
• Use effective oral expression strategies in making a formal presentation.
• Demonstrate effective written communication with use of revision.
• Participate responsibly and respectfully in informal group discussions.

Short response papers, final essay (3k-4k words), section participation, attendance
