Overview of class
This course is best suited for students who have completed Introduction to Painting or had the equivalent past coursework. This advanced painting course delves into various painting prompts and exercises that continue to develop the early painter. Students will study multiple source materials and approaches that will guide them in creating a painting, ranging from collage and text-based to personal research and film. Throughout the quarter, students will engage in classroom activities that promote experimentation and innovation. Prominent artists such as Luchita Hurtado, Ellen Gallagher, Ellsworth Kelly, Carmen Herrera, Kerry James Marshall, and Etel Adnan will be explored as guides toward experimentation. This course strongly emphasizes self-driven study, encouraging students to push the boundaries of their creative expression.
