Overview of class

From the invention of photography to the disappearing images of Snapchat, visual media has been used to represent and engage with the physical and social worlds. This course introduces students to the study of historical visual culture, with a focus on the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Grounded in photographic media, this course will examine new and emerging media forms in the Anglophone world, identifying the technical, artistic, economic, and social forces that informed their developments. Photography and cinema will be the focus of the course, however the themes and problems identified throughout the course will be turned to more contemporary examples of "new" media such as media-based apps and images circulated through the Internet.
