Overview of class

This course explores the relationship of music to the moving image with a focus on key musical media genres, including film musicals, concert films, the music video, and music documentaries. We will consider the history of music in film and other audio-visual media and how it has influenced and challenged audiovisual style and narrative conventions. We will further examine how musical genres interact with audiences, fan practices, and other culture industries, how these conjunctures have changed over the last hundred years, and how to apply genre-theoretical concerns to musical media cultures. Students will learn how to analyze and describe the style of various media objects and musical genres; understand musical genres in relationship to larger media histories and theories; and critically evaluate musical genres and fandom in relationship to questions of taste and representation.
