Overview of class

Bringing together topics, theories, and methods from dance studies and urban studies, this course poses questions about the relationships among moving bodies, dance, and urban space. We will engage with a series of U.S. and global case studies to consider the various ways in which dance practice and dance artists are both shaped by and contribute to the shaping of urban space. Course units will include dance in/and contemporary Chinese urban spaces, mid-century to contemporary Buenos Aires, and mid-century New York and Chicago. Over the course of the quarter, students will develop a written or creative research project on a topic of their choice.
