Overview of class

The course uses contemporary dance as a springboard to examine ways to activate queer theory through practice, discussion, and inventive movement development. Queer theory examines and critiques society's definitions of gender and sexuality, challenging traditional assumptions about these identities. In this class, we will examine ways to queer dance through explorations of gestural vocabulary, partnering, rhythm, spatial patterns, levels, among other conventions in contemporary dance. Students will gain confidence in their practice to create movement responses to queer theory over the quarter: solo fragments, duet fragments, and a synthesis of class materials. We will examine work by queer artists and scholars in order to expand our practice and choreographic explorations of queering contemporary dance.
