Overview of class

In this team-taught course, we will explore the significance of time as a social construct and theatrical device that shapes how we perceive, experience, and relate to both the world around us and the world of a performance. We will consider how our relationship with time is marked in religious observances, athletic competitions and seemingly mundane daily rituals. We will also examine how the passage of time is realistically and figuratively represented in literary works, film, television, and theatrical performances.

Learning Objectives

1. Students will identify key factors relevant to time, differentiate between multiple perspectives and interpretations of time, and explain how Theatre and Performance Studies disciplines might approach the study of time.

2. Students will demonstrate their ability to communicate ideas and/or experiences compellingly by using appropriate research tools, soliciting feedback, employing Theatre and Performance Studies disciplinary conventions to address audience expectations.

3. Students will collaborate with peers across different majors to successfully complete at least one group project and reflect upon the skills employed to accomplish that task.
