Overview of class
This class aims to equip vocalists and instrumentalists with the foundational knowledge and practical skills needed to perform Baroque music in historically informed style. Topics will include historical context, stylistic interpretation, and practical application for performance.
Teaching Method
By the end of the quarter, students will have a foundational understanding of Baroque performance practices, enabling them to approach 17th- and 18th-century music with stylistic awareness and historical insight including rhetorical delivery, affect, ornamentation, and improvisation.
Evaluation Method
Students will be evaluated based on consistent class attendance and active participation in discussions and in-class exercises, demonstrating engagement with the material and collaborative skills. Additionally, students will complete an independent study project, such as a brief research paper or presentation, which will showcase their application of historical performance practices and their understanding of Baroque stylistic principles.
