Overview of class
This course prepares master students to become successful piano teachers within the music community. It includes regular observations, pedagogy projects, and community engagement with the Northwestern Music Academy and local Music Teachers Association. The curriculum covers a comprehensive approach to piano instruction and technical training methods. Students will also learn about community music schools, standardized tests, and professional engagement.
Registration Requirements
Students must be graduate music majors. Please contact the instructor (lam.wong@northwestern.edu) to receive recommendations on registering for the course.
Learning Objectives
This course prepares students to become successful music teachers by equipping them with comprehensive piano instruction techniques, strategies for supporting intermediate students, insights into running community music schools, and skills for engaging with professional associations and creating online enrichment programs.
Teaching Method
Attendance and participation in Friday seminars are required, in addition to assigned observation and various projects outside of class time.
Evaluation Method
Students will be evaluated for their level of success in weekly written assignments, regular observations, class presentations, and pedagogy projects.
Class Materials (Required)
Students should be collegiate members of Music Teachers National Association (MTNA). The membership fee is $30 (subject to a small adjustment for 2024-25) for the entire academic year.
