Overview of class
This course will look at the symphony as a musical genre and discuss its origins, cultural influences, and its effect on music beyond classical music. As a musical genre that originated in the early 18th century and is still being composed today, symphonies are not only a representation of a composer's ability and achievement but also a time capsule that contains history, culture, and identity. We will be examining works by composers such as Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Mahler, and more, but besides studying the composers, the course will also explore historic events that affected symphony orchestras as an institution, such as the influence of aristocracy and the Industrial Revolution on the size and organization of orchestras. Students will not only come to appreciate the symphony as a genre and have basic knowledge of musical expression devices across various genres, but also gain an insight into the historical and cultural forces that have molded the compositions and performance practices.
