Overview of class

Music is a human practice of great power and influence. Thus, the goal of this class is for students to critically and eloquently engage with music as a historical, cultural, and social phenomenon. The aim is to equip students with foundational knowledge and vocabulary so that they can build competence and confidence in discussing any music they encounter.

This section of the course focuses on European and U.S. art music repertoire and will also explore music in response to students' interests. We will approach each material through perceptual, analytical, and historical lenses, connecting it to individual experiences and broader topics such as politics, identity, economy, gender, religion, technology, and the environment.
