Overview of class
In this introductory course, we will approach music as a cultural practice inseparable from its sociopolitical context(s). We will cover primarily (but not exclusively) Western genres, from pop to jazz and beyond, and explore how and why musicians express themselves by combining technical discussions of music (form, melody, tempo, etc.) with critical analyses of various historic and social conditions. The ability to read music is not required.
Class Materials (Required)
All materials will be made available through Canvas; students will not be required to purchase anything.
