Overview of class

This course is a thematic introduction to public policy at the undergraduate-level. It describes the goals involved in establishing many different kinds of public policies as well as the stumbling blocks along the way. We will engage debates about issues that are at the core of contemporary political debates in the United States, such as gun control, student debt cancellation, and other topics. We will also discuss other topics that are not at the center of contemporary discussion but open a lens onto deeper issues, for example, playgrounds, baby formula, and the federal civil service. Our goal is to build a vocabulary and framework for critically evaluating public policy ideas and better understanding the substance of political conflict in wealthy democracies like the United States.
